New Evaluation Approaches

Philanthropic organizations have entered a new era of heightened accountability, but the program evaluation tools needed to meet these new demands have only begun to be developed. New approaches are needed to develop a rapid and continuous flow of timely and cost-effective information back to foundations about how their grants and program strategies are doing. New vehicles for collaboration are essential to enable all participants addressing a given issue — funders, grantees, and policymakers — to become more knowledgeable and effective.

FSG is committed to advancing the field of evaluation through a multi-year action initiative to develop pragmatic evaluation approaches that enable foundations to achieve greater social impact. As part of this initiative, FSG will

  • Research newly emerging evaluation practices by foundations, whether large or small, that can contribute to greater effectiveness on the part of both foundations and their grantees
  • Develop frameworks, publications, presentations, and workbooks that offer practical guidance about evaluation
  • Document successful evaluation examples through downloadable case studies
  • Create on-line tools that enable foundations to find and conduct evaluations that meet their specific needs
  • Conduct evaluations for foundations and nonprofit organizations that provide actionable insights to improve strategy and increase impact
