Director of Evaluation (Boston, San Francisco or Seattle)
Position Description
FSG is looking to establish an Evaluation 'Practice' that will be the hub of evaluation-related client activity and intellectual capital development within FSG. The new group of evaluators would spearhead FSG’s existing and future work on evaluation in the field of philanthropy and interface regularly with FSG’s strategy consulting teams and Community Foundations Insight’s (CFI) analytical team. FSG seeks an experienced professional to serve an Executive Director role for this new division.
Responsibilities
The Director of Evaluation will report to the senior leadership of FSG Social Impact Advisors. This newly created position will be pivotal for building the new evaluation group from the ground up, with roles including strategy setting, hiring, and external marketing and communications activities. Once established, the Director will be responsible for all aspects of the evaluation 'business': leading evaluation projects, developing junior staff, developing and disseminating intellectual capital on evaluation for the benefit of the field and developing new business in partnership with the other members of FSG's leadership group:
- Lead evaluation projects from beginning to end (i.e., workplanning, problem-solving, and managing both team members and final client deliverables)
- Effectively represent FSG to our clients
- Lead, mentor and develop more junior team members in line with FSG's unique culture and values (i.e., meritocracy, non-hierarchical structure, willingness to play up and play down)
- Identify and work with outside contractors as needed
- Identify opportunities to build the field of evaluation by publishing ideas and/or tools that help foundations and nonprofits increase the impact of their work
- Identify and work closely with partners and/or advisory boards to develop these ideas, publish them, and disseminate them to the target audience
- Work closely with FSG and CFI on cross-cutting ideas that might benefit our client organizations
- Represent FSG in speaking engagements on evaluation as needed
- Interact and build relationships with program officers at major foundations
- Partner with current FSG Directors and Managing Directors to identify opportunities to support current clients with their evaluation efforts
- Work closely with FSG and CFI leadership to provide a seamless FSG experience for clients who might benefit from multiple forms of support
Requirements
- 10-12 years work experience including significant exposure to evaluation at or with philanthropic foundations, preferably in one of FSG's existing practice areas (CSR, Global Health, Global Development, Domestic Health, Education, Environment, and Community Philanthropy)
- Experience with or knowledge of a variety of evaluation and performance measurement techniques (such as appreciative inquiry, participatory evaluation and forward looking evaluation linked to strategy development)
- Demonstrated success in all aspects of evaluation — evaluation design, research, monitoring, analysis, synthesis, and report writing and editing
- Significant experience leading teams, developing employees and working collaboratively with both internal and external partners
- Experience leading an organization in a general manager or executive director capacity preferred
- Ability to think strategically and creatively in an entrepreneurial environment. Successful candidates will be comfortable working independently in an unstructured, dynamic environment while managing competing priorities
- Highly organized with a commitment to professional results
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in order to create clear, concise correspondence, proposals and reports (in both Word and PowerPoint)
- Excellent analytical skills with both qualitative and quantitative data
- Undergraduate degree required, MBA or other relevant graduate degree strongly preferred

Position is full-time, but offers flexible hours, and could be based at any of our US office locations (Boston, San Francisco, and Seattle). FSG is looking for experienced strategy consultants to serve as Directors in our Boston and San Francisco offices. Directors will be expected to take leadership roles in all aspects of the firm’s work including the following:

Accounting Manager (Boston)
Position Description
FSG Social Impact Advisors is seeking Accounting Manager based in our Boston, MA headquarters office. FSG is a rapidly growing 501(c) 3 strategy consulting firm that is looking for a proactive, reliable, independent worker who is comfortable wearing many hats. This is an excellent opportunity for a strong Accounting Manager looking to make an impact in a growing firm. With our continued growth comes the opportunity to take on new challenges and opportunities.
Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Accounting Manager will play a key role in managing the day-to-day accounting functions for the entire firm.
Key Responsibilities Include
- Help oversee the day-to-day processes related to employee expense processing, accounts payable, purchasing
- Work closely with the CFO to ensure the accurate and timely preparation of monthly financials (including cash flow, balance sheet and income statements)
- Take responsibility for all month-end general ledger entries, including accruals, and ensure the accuracy of all items in the G/L are in compliance with GAAP, for monthly review by CFO
- Properly classify and account for all grants in compliance with SFAS 116. Ensure compliance with auditor recommended procedures
- Reconcile all bank accounts in a timely manner for monthly review by CFO
- Provide support and analyses to the CFO and other firm leadership to develop annual operating budget
- Process multi-state bi-weekly payroll via an on-line processing system and international payroll with support of outside vendor. Ensure accuracy in all payroll entries, including new hires, changes, expense payments and terminations
- Administer 401k, including enrollments, disbursements and compliance testing
- Work with Office Manger to complete all new hire paperwork, including benefit enrollments. Manage COBRA and other end of employment paperwork
- Ensure we are in compliance with all state and federal filing requirements. Respond to state and federal requests
- Help manage the annual audit in a smooth and efficient manner. Take lead role in preparing and updating schedules throughout the year
- Ensure firm-wide compliance with all internal controls, proactively suggest and implement new measures to protect the security of all firm assets. Work closely with CFO with goal of making ongoing improvements
- From an accounting standpoint, manage fixed assets for all locations – including the proper recording of acquisitions, disposals and depreciation. Ensure the Fixed Asset data fully reconciles with the G/L
- Work with the CFO to guarantee the accuracy of foreign currency translations
- As a part of the overall operations team, help ensure that the firm is running in the most efficient way possible – identify and recommend cost or time saving processes, implement automation of data gathering for financial reporting, participate in the evaluation of the firm’s financial performance
- Other duties as needed to support a growing organization
Requirements
- BS in Accounting with at least 5 years experience in a similar role for a nonprofit organization
- Advanced Excel skills
- Knowledge of accounting software packages such as Peachtree
- Experience using an online multi-state payroll processing system such as ADP PayExpert
- Experience ensuring GAAP and tax compliance within a multi-state operation
- Technically adept and able to meet the challenges of working within an increasingly complex organization as we implement a new enterprise-wide accounting system
- CPA is preferred, but not required
- Exposure to international accounting rules preferred
