Social Investment Trends in the Pharmaceutical Industry: A Review of Global Pharmaceutical Firms Kyle Peterson and Laura Herman The pharmaceutical industry is among the most generous in the world with annual giving in excess of $3.5 billion. In addition to providing patients in the US, Europe and developing countries with lifesaving medicines and new product innovation, pharmaceutical firms frequently provide significant support for strengthening health systems, training medical personnel, and supporting young researchers. However, there is little research that goes beyond the quantitative summation of giving to look at the degree to which these contributions generate positive impact for society and for the pharmaceutical businesses. In 2003, FSG analyzed trends in pharmaceutical philanthropy on behalf of one of our clients. The purpose of the study was to understand how a select group of pharmaceutical companies creates value for society and their businesses through their philanthropic investments. Our approach aggregated survey data and interview responses to better understand the qualitative nature of pharmaceutical philanthropy, i.e. the strategies, activities and level of impact achieved by this industry’s generous levels of giving. We attempted to address questions beyond spend, focusing instead on such issues as the motivations for giving and how companies perceive benefits from their grantmaking. |
